5 M's of management
Business management is a long and tedious process, hence its structure is divided into five M's that lay the foundation of business
- Money
- Manpower
- Machines
- Materials,
- Method.
The goal-setting theory of motivation, first published in 1968 by American psychologist Dr. Edwin A. Locke, asserts that clear, well-defined, and measurable goals significantly improve performance. Locke and a colleague outlined five principles to guide goal setting(Jensen and Meckling 1976):
1. Gain clear direction: By thinking through the details of your goals, you can make decisions, prioritize tasks, and manage effort and energy effectively(Boulding 1956).
2. Keep an eye on progress: By setting specific goals, you can better monitor your progress and stay on track. For example, if your team is only a quarter of the way to achieving a goal, you can take steps to improve(Boulding 1956).
3. Bask in the success: The feeling of accomplishment is gratifying when you set yourself up with something that truly matters to you. The Progress Principle suggests that even small steps or wins throughout the process can be both motivating and meaningful(Hill and Jones 1992).
In summary, goal-setting is a crucial process for achieving success and achieving success. By following these principles, you can create a more motivated and successful team(Jørgensen 2013).
Management aims to optimize resources, improve efficiency, maximize profits, promote personal development, maintain quality, maintain workplace spirit, maintain discipline, and reduce risk factors. It involves implementing logistic methods to detect waste and improve efficiency, collaborating with departments and leaders to identify areas for improvement, and promoting personal development through seminars, mentoring programs, training resources, and internal promotions(Grundy et al., 2005).
Maintaining quality is crucial for the organization's success, and management teams collaborate with other departments, supervisors, and workers to establish, execute, and sustain quality standards. Maintaining a positive workplace culture, attitudes, and morale can increase the intrinsic drive for employees to perform their work and contribute to the organization's overall success(Jones, 1991).
Management is essential for businesses to thrive in today's global marketplace. According to Peter Drucker, it involves influencing or bringing about change in another entity, maximizing assets for efficiency and pursuing set goals. Management is crucial at all levels of a firm, including schools, universities, corporations, and government agencies, and is essential for any business or industry producing physical goods(Mørck et al., 1988).
Prioritizing staff development helps team members adapt to industry trends
and best practices. Employers who invest in education can boost
retention, engagement, and revenue. Professional development improves employees' skills and knowledge, benefiting both the individual and the employer by providing access to learning opportunities. Managers significantly impact team productivity, accounting for 70% of employee engagement variance.
They must understand team members' skill levels, strengths, and weaknesses to achieve optimal results. Managers can enhance productivity by setting clear goals, motivating employees, and allocating resources effectively. They should set clear expectations, ensure employees understand their tasks, and allocate sufficient time for efficient task completion. This approach maximizes overall productivity within a company.
Different businesses have different methods of estimating productivity according to their work culture and purposes. Therefore, measuring productivity is essential to know about the present position of the company and the work performance of employees for a better outcome. So, here are the measures that might be used to evaluate productivity:
- Total admin tasks conducted
- Revenue generated
- Sales call completed
- Deals closed
- Quality/quantity of products
- Total products marketed
- Quantity of data inputted
- Total reports generated
- Working hours logged
- Training completed
Productivity is crucial in the workplace for employee engagement, motivation, and overall success. It leads to better work-life balance, increased employee engagement, and increased profit and revenue. A positive work culture and motivated workforce result in customer satisfaction and long-term connections. Stress and unmotivation can lead to decreased productivity and increased loss. Therefore, productivity is essential for a company's growth and success(Whetten and Cameron 2005).
